Ecopetrol announces US$ 28.5 million investment for construction of Latin America’s largest green hydrogen plant

The initiative will have the potential to produce up to 8,000 tons of hydrogen produced from renewable sources per year.

Ecopetrol, Colombia’s energy conglomerate, announced the construction of a green hydrogen plant at its Cartagena refinery, with an estimated investment of US$28.5 million. The company’s president, Ricardo Roa, made the announcement, noting that this plant will be the largest of its kind in the Latin American region.

The initiative is projected to have an installed capacity of 5 MW and will be designed to produce 800 tons of green hydrogen per year. It is expected to start operations in the first half of 2026, integrating with the refinery’s fuel hydrotreatment process.

This announcement is in line with the country’s efforts to move towards an economy with greater independence from fossil fuels. In this framework, majority state-owned Ecopetrol has also unveiled plans to participate in the auction of offshore wind energy projects, highlighting its commitment to the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
