The event in Santa Cruz underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration to drive an effective and sustainable energy transition.
Bolivia 2050 Energy Transition Forum: renewable energies, green hydrogen and climate finance

The Energy Transition Forum Bolivia was held in the city of Santa Cruz, a key space for debate on investments, technological progress and financing for sustainable energy projects. The event was attended by various cooperation agencies, including the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GIZ GmbH, which contributed in thematic groups on the development of renewable energies and energy transition.
During the forum, different working groups were set up to address key issues for the country’s energy transition. Among them were:
- Renewable energies and energy efficiency
The need to create a new regulatory framework that promotes the use of clean energy, reduces dependence on fossil fuels and encourages the development of emerging technologies such as electromobility was discussed.
- Green hydrogen
Bolivia’s potential as a key means of decarbonizing its economy was explored. Fiscal incentives and regulatory frameworks that would facilitate the development of this industry and the opening of export markets were also discussed.
According to a diagnosis of the forum, the country has an outstanding solar energy potential, positioning it as an ideal candidate for the production of green hydrogen. This technology would not only contribute to the decarbonization of the national economy, but would also make it possible to satisfy domestic energy demand and access export markets under the “Power-to-X” concept.
The Plurinational State of Bolivia’s commitment to industrialization through science and technology was also highlighted, emphasizing the use of environmentally responsible energy sources and vectors.
- Climate finance
Strategies for accessing international climate financing were also analyzed, as well as the regulatory frameworks needed to structure projects that accelerate the country’s energy transition.
