Green hydrogen in Peru: amendments to H2V promotion law presented

Following the publication of the Law for the Promotion of Green Hydrogen in Peru, which promotes its development, production, storage, transportation, distribution and use, the Government presented modifications to it in relation to the definition of the fuel. Thus, the definition of green hydrogen was replaced as “an energy vector produced with low greenhouse gas emission technologies” to “that obtained from water through processes that use renewable energy resources as a source of energy“.
In response to this change, the Peruvian Hydrogen Association, H2 Peru, stressed the importance of including other sources of renewable hydrogen production using biomass or fossil resources with carbon capture and sequestration. In this line, they argued that the inclusion of alternatives in the framework of the law is fundamental to advance in the reduction of emissions, energy security and transition to clean sources.
In this context, it is worth remembering that H2 Peru together with the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Lima launched a call in May this year, for the elaboration of the Proposal for the Regulation of the Law for the Promotion of Green Hydrogen. This with the aim of providing support to legislative and regulatory institutions in Peru by proposing a model regulation for the hydrogen sector, integrating international practices in the area. This proposal, elaborated by both entities together with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, is expected to be presented around October 2024.
