Panama expands its energy market by promoting green hydrogen and its derivatives

The Minister of Energy announced a new alliance between the Ministry of Energy and the Technological University of Panama.

Juan Manuel Urriola, National Energy Secretary, informed that Panama will continue diversifying its energy sources and adopting sustainable technologies, such as the production of green hydrogen and ethanol. Thus, the country expands its energy market by integrating the use of clean energies and reaffirming its commitment to the fight against climate change.

In this context, the minister highlighted the importance of ethanol as an energy source in Panama, projecting that, in a period of no more than one year, the country’s fuel will be a blend of ethanol and gasoline.

In order to promote these developments, a strategic alliance was announced between the Technological University of Panama and the Ministry of Energy. Thus, it seeks to incorporate new sources of work in the energy sector, promoting innovation and economic growth in Panama, through the formation of human capital.

What is ethanol?

Ethanol is a biofuel produced mainly from plant materials, such as corn or sugar cane. Its use as an additive in fossil fuels reduces polluting gas emissions, promoting cleaner and more sustainable energy.

What is the role of green hydrogen in ethanol production?

Green hydrogen, produced through the electrolysis process, is used in chemical synthesis processes that convert the captured CO₂ into ethanol, thus closing the carbon cycle. This not only allows CO₂ emissions to be reduced, but also contributes to the production of ethanol with a neutral or even negative carbon balance.

Green hydrogen is also capable of complementing bioenergy systems, supplying clean energy for ethanol distillation and purification processes, promoting a more sustainable production process.
