Technical cooperation between Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia and Germany promotes advancement of green hydrogen and geothermal policies

Through the exchange of knowledge and experiences, the countries seek to accelerate the development of clean energy policies and projects.

Within the framework of international technical cooperation, the Triangular Cooperation Project “Exchange of experiences and technical information on green hydrogen, its derivatives and geothermal energy between Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia and Germany (GeoH2Verde)”, implemented by the German Cooperation GIZ and financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development BMZ, promotes the exchange of knowledge and experiences on green hydrogen, its derivatives and geothermal energy. This initiative seeks to facilitate regional collaboration to address the challenges and lessons learned around green hydrogen and geothermal energy as key sources to diversify the energy matrix and achieve climate commitments.

Aimed primarily at public and private stakeholders in Honduras and El Salvador, GeoH2Verde supports the structuring of national roadmaps for green hydrogen and the development of pilot projects. In addition, the project involves Colombia, a country with high geothermal energy potential, to strengthen technical exchange with Central American countries.

Main activities developed to date:

  • Hydrogen technical exchange tour in Cartagena, Colombia: participation in the H2 LAC Summit event through an institutional stand, as well as a benchmarking process with companies developing hydrogen projects. Four technical visits were made to hydrogen projects and a workshop on enabling conditions, with emphasis on regulatory frameworks for green hydrogen and its derivatives.
  • Diagnostic study with UNEP: in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and with the support of Colombia, El Salvador and Honduras, a diagnostic study is in its final phase to identify national and regional barriers to green hydrogen production in both countries.
  • MOOC on green hydrogen: between June and July 2025, a massive online course (MOOC) will be held for 150 public and private stakeholders in Honduras, El Salvador and Colombia. This activity will be carried out in coordination with the Decarbonization Diplomacy (H2-Diplo) project, financed by the German Foreign Office with funds from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and implemented by GIZ.

At the conclusion of GeoH2Verde, participating countries are expected to strengthen their decision-making capabilities, optimize their regulatory frameworks and consolidate enabling conditions, which will allow them to integrate into new energy markets that have not yet been tapped.
