Low-emission hydrogen regulatory framework in Latin America: lessons learned and shared challenges
With the participation of more than 250 people, the virtual event was organized in collaboration with our strategic allies from the International Power-to-X Hub and our partners from the Center for Energy Regulatory Activity Studies (CEARE) of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The webinar featured a panel of experts who analyzed the current situation in their countries regarding the regulation of low-emission hydrogen, sharing lessons learned and highlighting the challenges to advance in the creation of regulatory frameworks that promote hydrogen as an energy vector in the current context of climate crisis.
Panelists:
- Argentina: Griselda Lambertini, academic director of CEARE, University of Buenos Aires.
- Chile: Karla Chace, head of the Fuels Regulation and Market Unit in the Fuels and New Energy Division of the Ministry of Energy.
- Colombia: Juan Camilo Zapata, leader of hydrogen and derivatives of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
- Uruguay: Verónica González, advisor to the National Energy Directorate of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining.
In Latin America, several countries are already adopting regulations and strategies to promote this industry. In this line, addressing the issue of regulation is key to defining competencies, creating incentives and establishing rules, as well as facilitating access to innovative financing and incentive policies that accelerate hydrogen production and use.
In addition, during the event, Antonio Fernandez, advisor to the International Power-to-X Hub in Brussels, presented the regulatory developments in the European Union. Jacob Englander, from the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technologies Office of the U.S. Department of Energy, presented the regulatory initiatives developed in his country.
Welcoming remarks were given by Geert Anckaert, sector manager of the European Commission’s Directorate General for International Partnerships, and Stephan Remler, leader of the International Power-to-X Hub in Argentina. The panel was moderated by Verónica Chorkulak, technical advisor of the International Power-to-X Hub in Argentina.
