Bolivia presents its roadmap and strategy for green hydrogen development

Both documents are aligned with the country’s energy diversification and sustainability objectives.

The Government of Bolivia unveiled the Roadmap and the National Strategy for the Development of Green Hydrogen, with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The launching of the strategic documents was addressed by the Vice Minister of Alternative Energies, Alvaro Arnez, and the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energies, Alejandro Gallardo, who highlighted the importance of these strategic documents in the framework of energy diversification and sustainability of the country.

The Roadmap establishes clear goals for the production of green hydrogen as an energy alternative, projecting its development towards the year 2050. Meanwhile, the National Strategy analyzes Bolivia’s competitiveness in this emerging sector, identifying demand opportunities both locally and internationally. Green hydrogen is positioned as a key solution to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, promoting a transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix.

This progress is in line with Bolivia’s international commitments, particularly with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and its global environmental commitments. In addition, the government is working on a specific bill for the green hydrogen sector, with the aim of establishing a legal framework to promote its development and deployment in the country.

International Forum on Hydrocarbons and Renewable Energies

On November 22, 2024, in the framework of the International Forum on Hydrocarbons, Fertilizers, Renewable Energies and Alternatives, Bernhardt Johst, coordinator of the ProTransition Program from GIZ Bolivia, presented “Energiewende and Bolivia: Shared Challenges in the Search for Energy Sustainability”. During this event, the implementation of green hydrogen HUBs and its derivatives was also presented, as well as the presentation of the National Strategy for the production of green hydrogen in Bolivia, a fundamental step in the country’s energy transition process.

With the presentation of these documents and the support of international organizations, Bolivia reaffirms its commitment to the development of a sustainable energy model that promotes independence from fossil fuels and encourages the use of renewable energies. Green hydrogen is configured as a central element of this energy future, in line with the objectives of sustainability and inclusive economic growth.
